Trash-to-Treasure

Fashionistas from Guestlist headquarters have rummaged through many-a-second-hand-clothes-rail to give you a shortlist of the best charity shops London has to offer.  From designer cast-offs to vintage bargains, you’re bound to unearth something unique and quirky in these trashy treasure troves – happy foraging!

British Red Cross, Victoria
It’s where the shop is based that’s key – you’ll find this branch packed with sublime thrift and designer labels thanks to donations from wealthy locals. Brands in stock include Prada, Armani, D&G, Chanel couture cast-offs, and Manolo Blahnik shoes.  There is also a brilliant understated vintage book selection that includes Christie/Sotheby catalogues from years past.

British Red Cross, 85 Ebury St, SW1W 9QU (020 7730 2235). Victoria tube/rail. 10am-5.30pm Mon-Fri; 10am-4pm Sat.

Oxfam, Dalston
This branch is mahoosively large thanks to its former stance as a cinema in the 1950s.  A real hotchpotch of mens & women’s clothing, records, books and homewares, expect to find amongst the curios suits, gowns and wedding dresses, the usual  separates and the odd decent plate, cutlery or teapot.  With something of a cult status in the area (it has its own local blogger a.k.a. “Dalston Oxfam Shop” who scours the music section for obscure tapes), the average garment is priced around the £3 – now that’s a bargain! You really do feel like you might find something incredible in here.  Maybe.

Oxfam, 514-518, Kingsland Rd, E8 4AH (020 7254 5318/www.oxfam.co.uk). Dalston Kingsland rail. 9.30am-5.20pm Mon-Fri; 9.30am-6pm Sat; noon-4pmSun.

Barnardo’s, Brixton
This vast and lively charity shop harbours an array of exciting and unpredictable mishmash.  High-street clothes can be snapped up for less than a tenner, and designer bargains for not that much more – as seen recently with a Betty Jackson summer floral dress going for £50.

Barnardo’s, 414 Brixton Rd, SW9 7AY (020 7274 4165). Brixton tube/rail. 9am-5pm Mon-Sat; 10am-5pm Sun.
