Album of the Moment: Best Of Alpha Blondy

Reggae | Tuesday 11th February 2014 | Noam

The recent double-CD release of Alpha Blondy’s Best Of album is a great opportunity to rediscover the Ivory Coast legend of reggae. Seydou Kone (Alpha Blondy) is one of the rare African singers to have had such a breakthrough in reggae. As the ambassador of French and his native language (Dioula) in reggae as well as the living truth of Rastafarian African roots, he has spread his rockers throughout the world and generations.

His lyrics are full of positivism, spiritualism and militancy. From messages of unity, such as in the classic Jerusalem - where he calls for peace whilst quoting Arabic, French, English and Hebrew – to Politiqui sung mainly in Dioula, his cultural diversity is illustrated by the diversity of his sound, although his music remains constantly light, joyful and very accessible.

If you haven’t listened to any of Alpha’s music, this is the chance to enlighten your day with some African roots performed by a ‘living legend’.
