Paloma talks politics and what's wrong with it

Other | Thursday 7th July 2016 | Kat

Paloma Faith chats to Owen Jones about politics, its detachment from the modern world and the roles that musicians should be playing.

Never one to not speak her opinions, she criticises the factors behind Brexit from both sides. 'The campaign for remain and leave was full of lies. They weren't giving an actual explanation of any outcome'.

She hints at the major issues which led to the outcome saying that 'people in Britain are sick of the 1% having everything' and claims that the way previous events such as the London riots have been dealt with should have been better. 'That was kind of washed over... there was a lack of research into understanding what happened'.

'The problem with politics today is that it's not speaking a modern language, it needs updating, you should be able to vote online for example.'

Upon being questioned on influence of the music industry, she acknowledges that most musicians do not speak out because of their worries about album sales and suffering abuse on social media. 'It's a shame that more of that doesn't happen. When I look back, I see people like Nina Simone and Bob Dylan doing this'.

When asked for any advice to young people she urges those 'to have confidence in what they believe in, be informed, rather than listening to hearsay and realise that they do have a lot of power'.

Owen praises the rarity of Paloma as a mainstream musician who speaks out. We would certainly love to see more artists in this field standing up and being heard!
