Liverpool... the hippest city in Merseyside and the birthplace of the Beatles and a tour of Liverpool's musical roots is an ideal city break.
The Beatles, formed in 1960, otherwise known as The Fab Four became widely regarded as the most influential act of the rock era and the UNESCO World heritage site at the Albert Dock hosts the largest permanent exhibition of the lives and times of the band.
In the Beatles Story, visitors can join in a historical and chronological tour of members' early lives, following the development towards being at the top of the world. Amazingly, a section of Beatlemania visuals and objects will turn back time to the 1960s to remind visitors of the intense fan frenzy around the Beatles at the time. Along the trip, their stories unfold through an audio guide, narrated by John Lennon's sister, Julia. At the end of the exhibition, there is an exclusive section about John Lennon and his solo career after leaving the Beatles. There is a number of souvenirs and premastered CDs/DVDs for visitors to the Beatles Story shop.
Being located inside the Pier Head, "The Elvis and Us" exhibition explores how the King of 'Rock 'n' Roll' inspired the band. Recently, the Beatles Hidden Gallery, which is a rare collection, is open to the public.
Cavern Club is also a recommended destination for music lovers. The Beatles played in the club about 300 times. The club is located on Matthew Street. Experience the stage the Fab Four started on, have some drinks and listen to your favourite hits from the band.
International Beatles Week, the biggest Beatles celebration in the world, is run every August. The weeklong festival features over 200 bands from around the world and specialist Beatles tributes.
Whatever your music tastes now. We can all learn something from history in one of music's liveliest towns.
