Earl Sweatshirt – Doris

Earl’s New Album, Doris

Hot rapper and member of controversial hip-hop outfit, Odd Future, Earl Sweatshirt today (20th August) released his second solo album, Doris. A lot was expected of the rapper dubbed “the best rapper in the world” by Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator when he was just 16 years old.

14 tracks, with no less than 11 of them having features, but undoubtedly, its Earl’s own prowess that sticks out on each joint! With the sheer amount of features including Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator and Wu-Tang legend, RZA, it would be fair to assume that Earl could have been overshadowed on his own LP, but he wasn’t having it! His voice was heard in every song, all bringing new themes and stories to tell.

Arguably, the stand out track from Doris is ‘Chum’. Quickly painting vivid pictures with his words within the initial hook, Earl takes us on a journey within his following verses. He describes the absence of his father and how he attempted to mask the fact that he really missed him; his search for an older brother figure came in that of OFWGKTA leader, Tyler and also his troubles with obedience as an adolescent – a much ‘deeper’ track than we’re used to from Earl.

The only criticism I can currently give to the album is the lack of direction is seems to have. Though a majority of the tracks are lyrically very enticing and quite literally, music to my ears, it seems that the album as a whole doesn’t flow very well. Not in terms of lyrical capability, but instead of the track themes and musical consistency. None or few of the tracks sound the same – however, this could just be the absolute genius of the rapper that Tyler spoke of. 14 different tracks able to showcase the different abilities of the young rapper.

This album is definitely a must listen for all hip-hop fans.

Here’s another track from Doris with his pal Tyler titled 'Whoa'.
