Material Consumption Falls In The UK

Other | Monday 29th February 2016 | Tom

Within the past decade the amount of goods and materials that people in the UK consume has fallen dramatically.

In 2001 the average person consumed 15 tonnes of material, whereas last year the average UK citizen consumed roughly 10 tonnes of goods. This is good news for planet earth.

A major factor in the decrease in consumption is the changes that have been observed regarding the shift to a more digitally based lifestyle. The introduction apps and MP3s has eliminated the need for more material goods.

In 2000 British households bought 126 million CDs, however, last year only 54 million were sold. This is a near 100% decrease in sales.

This decrease in material consumption has occurred even though there has been a rise in population.

The UK now has one of the lowest domestic consumptions per head in Europe.

But we can all consume less.
