Hip Hop Spotlight: New Singles of the Week

RnB/Hip Hop | Monday 1st February 2016 | Michael

In our weekly update of the latest singles, there's plenty in hip hop to be putting the spotlight on. From new Drake vs. Meek tracks, Nas collaborating with Future and Vince Staples teaming up with electronic producer Flume, we've got you covered for the hottest tracks making waves.

1. Drake - Summer Sixteen

Dropped first on episode 14 of OVO Sound Radio, Drake has finally released his new single "Summer Sixteen". Featuring the 6 man at his most intense and aggressive, 'Summer Sixteen" takes shots at Meek, Chris Brown, Tory Lanez, and surpisingly, Barack Obama. Earlier in the month, Obama spoke after his final State of the Union address that Kendrick Lamar would beat Drake 1 on 1. We're eagerly awaiting Obama's diss track in response.

Listen via Apple Music.

2. Flume - Smoke & Retribution Ft. Vince Staples & Kučka

Australian electronic producer Flume has teamed up with Vince Staples for the second single from his upcoming album. “Smoke & Retribution” is an unusual but welcomed setting for Staples with a synth-heavy production from Flume. The track was featured first on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music and can be streamed below via YouTube.

3. Future - March Madness (Remix) Ft. Nas

OVO Sound Radio may have made waves with a Drake exclusive, but Nas freestyling over Future’s “March Madness” was a definite highlight too. As one of 2015’s biggest hits, the single needed a veteran to add their own bars for a remix to be worthy. Nas showing appreciation to Future is a big deal, and over the top of Tarantino production, the move has definitely paid off.

4. Meek Mill - War Pain

No one was asking for a new Drake Diss from Meek, and many felt second-hand embarrassment after Drake’s “Back to Back” showed the distance between Meek and the 6 man. “War Pain” is a big step up to “Wanna Know” though and his bars are way more affirmative. Meek also seems to directly address Drake’s lines from “Summer Sixteen” that was released just minutes before on OVO Sound Radio, with Meek later posting on Instagram that he was tipped off about Drake’s lyrics by a ghostwriter. The beef continues…
