Where’s all the soul gone?

Monday 17th June 2013 | Michael

London is the Jazz capital of the world. You wouldn’t have thought it would you? Since when have Jazz, RnB and Soul nights become boring? How come this mass audience of multi-cultures and ultimate wealth have forgotten about some of the greatest pleasures in all of mankind?

I only heard recently that London is the capital of jazz, I couldn’t fucking believe it. I have grown up with the sounds of American soul artists, I then developed a love for the blues and to hear I was moving to London; I was over the moon. I actually talked to a Jazz player who was playing at the OXO tower and he laughed when I told him that London was the Jazz capital of the world. His reaction has now made me think more…

It made me think, where’s all the soul gone? All I hear and see about is shit reality TV winner’s bringing out new album’s and London’s crazy underground music scenes. What about the heritage of all these sounds, beats and rhythms you hear on your radios and IPod’s, well apparently they're all somewhere in London. It’s just about finding those gem nightclubs that play the blues, scream soul from their lungs and move to the rhythm.

Clubs like Ronnie Scott’s still party on, years after their prime time in musical history. Club 100 is famous for a familiar face to popular music, Amy Winehouse. The club’s walls are beautifully filled with paintings from the owner, who also seems to have a thing for Amy and her contribution to the club. I wish to find more places dedicated to the heart and soul of music itself or as it use to be called, Devil Music.

I hope in the future I see more advertising and more gigs from these genres, I wish I could see Otis Redding singing his heart out in Finsbury Park, and the Rolling Stones playing another legendary gig at the Ealing Jazz club… In reality, this will never happen, but the future of Jazz, Rhythm n Blues and Soul within London is surely something that can be treasured. Soul is still deep in the heart of London, its just finding it.
