Get set for a sonic journey with Superpoze’s Opening

Other | Monday 20th April 2015 | Christina

Almost a year in the making, French producer Superpoze announces the release of his first LP Opening, through his own label Combien Mille Records on 8th June.

Opening marks a revolution in Superpoze’s sound, which according to him is now “very moving, personal electro, focusing on melody as never before”. It’s a marked contrast with his earlier work, which placed him firmly within a school of French beats alongside the likes of STWO, Fakear, Dream Koala, and Thylacine. His debut EP From The Cold and performances at festivals such as like Transmusicales, Montreux Jazz Festival, and Pukkelpop have all led up to the release of this long-awaited debut LP.

Superpoze has said Opening is deliberately pared down, with any tracks that would have disrupted the balance excluded. His new sound is pronounced in ‘Overseas’, with the gradual build of the electronics enhancing the piano-driven melody, but he also reminds us of his roots in beats with the undulating ‘Ten Lakes’.

The album unfolds effortlessly, and though each individual track can stand alone, Opening can also feel like one long, beautifully crafted piece of electronica, a journey through sound. At times dark, at times restrained, and at times uplifting – particularly on final track ‘Home Is Where I Am’ - Opening is a considered piece of production that commands attention, and shows that electronic music can be moving.

After a spot at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival as Kuage, the duo he formed with Adrien of Concrete Knives, this March, and with Opening coming this June, 2015 is set to be a big year for Superpoze.
