Banksy tags Gaza

Other | Tuesday 3rd March 2015 | Christina

New Banksy artworks have appeared amongst the rubble of Gaza. The notorious graffiti artist claims to have snuck into Gaza via a secret illegal underground tunnel to create the pieces, which include a fairground ride, a cat, a woman crying and a message that reads “If we wash our hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless we side with the powerful – we don’t remain neutral”.

This is not his first time in Palestine, he visited the West Bank in 2005 and painted some of his most famous pieces directly onto the separation wall. Banksy is certainly not shy about his opinions on the area. The caption that accompies the fairgound ride piece reads "Gaza is often described as ‘the world’s largest open air prison’ because no-one is allowed to enter or leave. But that seems a bit unfair to prisons — they don’t have their electricity and drinking water cut off randomly almost every day.”

In tagging areas of Gaza, Banksy has ensured that people’s attention has returned to the war zone. In a satirical video titled “Make this the year YOU discover a new destination”, he juxtaposes tourist clichés with footage of Gaza’s destruction to powerful effect. Watch it in full below:
