Everything’s Fine for Isaac Indiana

Wednesday 28th November 2012 | David

The South-West’s finest are really hitting the spot with their debut EP.

Introducing Isaac Indiana, a five-piece indie outfit formed deep in Devon in 2010. Made up of Andy Jackson, Ben Homer, Ben Houghton, Sam Hall and Tom Sturges, they have already made a splash at Beach Break festival and Aussie Kiss Festival to massive acclaim, and the only way is up for this feel-good quintet.  A review on Independent Clauses stated that "Isaac Indiana splits the difference between indie-pop and indie-rock", and they’re not wrong.

Their debut EP, Speak Up, was released in the summer of last year – and summer was definitely the perfect time for their tunes. The lead track ‘Everything’s Fine’ is a cracking opener showcasing the group’s undeniable talents, with crisp guitars, energetic drumming and flawless harmonies. It’s a crowd favourite with an anthemic sing-along chorus. ‘Sun Down’ is my personal highlight, featuring the smooth sounds of the saxophone and some pretty jazzy keys, wonderfully  counterbalanced by a roof-raising guitar solo and held together by that beautifully chilled-out bass – a great tune, as the lyrics say, to “sit and watch the sun go down” to.

In less able hands, the combination of two guitars, piano, saxophone and vaulting vocals might be too crowded. Supported by a stellar rhythm section, however, they end up complementing each other perfectly rather than fighting for the spotlight. This is especially evident on the title track: the arrangement is busy, but it flows seamlessly.

Keep an eye out for Isaac Indiana: they may have only been around for a couple of years, but I can see them going very far. In the meantime, check out the band’s soundcloud here, and have a watch of the video for ‘Everything’s Fine’. Feel free to dance madly to it, or just kick back with a beer and soak it in. Both approaches work just fine.
