Lazy Habits drop their debut album

Wednesday 28th November 2012 | David

Jazz/hip hop fusion might not be conventional, but this group have really got it down.

They’ve already played several festivals, and at last, Lazy Habits are putting their self-titled debut album out. It’s a joyously catchy record and appeals to a wide spectrum of music lovers. I’m no hip hop aficionado, but this is something else. The unlikely union of London rap with jazz backing provides a fresh sound that is pretty much incomparable to anything else out there at the moment.

A running theme is of the group’s efforts to get to the top, encompassed perfectly in ‘The Road’: “There’s a road, there’s a path you have to follow, forget your yesterdays and see tomorrow”. It’s motivating whilst also making easy listening. The collaboration with Babysol on ‘Memory Banks’ is a definite highlight: her voice really lends itself to the jazzy backdrop to the clever rapping of the band. A personal favourite has to be ‘Bulletin’, which explores some darker themes like suicide (“We can make friends, we can make enemies, sooner or later we’ll meet at the cemetery”) whilst still getting listeners to nod along and lose themselves in the wonderful brass rhythm.

Lazy Habits is something of a misnomer – they’ve worked damn hard to get to where they are today and they deserve every success they will no doubt achieve. The album is out now so make sure you get your hands on a copy, because it’s definitely not one you want to miss out on.

Check out the video for ‘Bulletin’ below.
