Doherty taking liberties with his fans

Wednesday 26th September 2012 | David

The controversial singer cancelled his second Glasgow show in a row yesterday, inciting anger in his followers.

What exactly has Peter Doherty got against Glasgow? Yesterday saw the former Libertines frontman cancel his gig at the O2 ABC venue, making it two for two on performances he has cancelled in the city. Citing “unforeseen circumstances” – nice of him to provide details – Doherty has apologised and refunds are available, but fans are distinctly unhappy, with one stating “I’m sick of him letting us down”, and another writing that he is an “absolute disgrace”. Despite promises to reschedule the event, it seems that a fair few of his supporters can’t stand him now.

Doherty has seen great success with his bands, The Libertines and Babyshambles, the latter of which is still just about alive and kicking. His achievements have come despite a past blighted by drug abuse and various run-ins with the law, with the troubled star possessing a cocktail of illegal substances over the years and occasionally popping in and out of jail. I suppose if you’re going to bring heroin to court, as Doherty did in December 2009, you’re asking for trouble.

It’s a shame for someone who is undoubtedly very talented. He actually did well in school, getting multiple A grades at A level. Who knew? Not me, that’s for certain. It’s not something necessarily expected from a man who has done time as a drug dealer in order to fuel his habits. Then again, we’ve all been told at some stage not to judge a book by its cover, no matter how tattered or hopped up on crack it is.

This book, however, does appear to have a few chapters missing, specifically those set in Glasgow. He is still set to play The Ironworks in Inverness tonight, followed by a trip to Paris for a gig on Friday at Le Gibus. Provided, of course, he doesn’t decide to do something else on those nights.
