Chance The Rapper's The Social Experiment... Hip Hop's next big thing?

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 27th November 2014 | Matt

We love Chance The Rapper here at Guestlist. As such, we're always super excited when he announces a new project or drops a new track. Anyone who's seen him live recently will have noticed that he's been playing with a live band rather than just the standard DJ and MC set-up. This band is The Social Experiment, and they're absolutely incredible. If you've been keeping an eye on Chance's Soundcloud page then you may have noticed he's dropped a few tracks as a member of The Social Experiment recently, most notably a soulful cover of the theme from Arthur (Nostalgia alert!). So far all of these have been fairly low key, but that all changed yesterday.

In an interview with Billboard, he revealed that The Social Experiment were working on their first album, and he's now dropped the first song from the album via his Soundcloud. The track, named 'Sunday Candy' is the same soulful, bluesy and majorly uplifting hip hop that we've come to expect from Chance, but with added percussion, gospel influenced backing vocals and live instrumentation. The result is incredible. If this first taste of the album, titled 'Surf', is anything to go by then we are in for a real treat.

To be honest, this track couldn't have come at a better time. Popular music in general is a bit overwhelmed by increasingly generic EDM and cheesy, god-awful manufactured pop, and it's becoming a lot harder to find anything making waves in the mainstream that has any kind of soul. We love DJs and mixes at Guestlist, but its not very often that a live band that aren't playing rock or indie catch our attention. This is one of those rare occasions.

We can't wait for Surf to drop, so we'll be rinsing the tracks that have been released so far in the office in the mean time. Check them out:
