Nelson Mandela Dies.
Today we lost a hero.
A legend, a freedom fighter, a political activist and a president has died. A man who has been influential to generations, a spiritual leader, a model for forgiveness. A man who stands with Ghandi Martin Luther King, Malcolm X as one of the biggest figures of the 20th century. Lest we forget the British government supported apartied while he was in jail.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said Mr Mandela was a "great man.... a unique political figure at a unique moment in history". He was very strong in his objections to the Iraq war and made his feeling felt to Tony Blair.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were watching a film premiere about the life of Nelson Mandela in London when news of the former South African president's death emerged.
Prince William said after the film: "We were just reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now."
Many others paid their respects in a way unseen since the passing of Princess Diana.
President Barack Obama led reactions to the news that former South African President Nelson Mandela had passed away, hailing the late statesman as a leader who left his country with a legacy of freedom and peace with the world.
"He achieved more than could be expected of any man," Obama said at the White House shortly after the announcement of Mandela's death.
"Today he's gone home, and we've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth," Obama said.
Mike Tyson: "I'm hearing about Nelson Mandela's death while on African soil in Oran, Algeria. Sending prayers to Mandela's family."
