Preview: Submotion Orchestra’s New Album ‘Alium’ – 24th November

Other | Friday 31st October 2014 | Christina

Submotion Orchestra, the genre-bending 7-piece from Leeds, continue to defy categorisation with their new album Alium, released on November 24th. Following their critically acclaimed releases, Finest Hour and Fragments, the band continue to expertly fuse electronica, jazz, soul and dubstep whilst also cultivating a more expansive sound. On Alium, Submotion Orchestra mix the kind of deep basslines you would expect from an underground DJ set with stunning, ballad-worthy vocals from Ruby Wood. The jazz inflections present across each track lift their sound to another level and make the album unique.

The opener ‘Awakening’ sets the tone of the record perfectly – it’s a wonderfully layered track that builds masterfully, incorporating heavy bass, percussion, jazz riffs and electronic accents. Submotion Orchestra shift between moods effortlessly, allowing you to experience a range of emotion across the whole album. With its dubstep bassline and soaring vocals, ‘Time Will Wait’ is incredibly soulful, the beat driven ‘Chrome Units’ is much heavier and darker, and ‘Rust’ is beautifully melodic and stirring.

It all actually works beautifully together and the album remains cohesive even with the interplay of all the different genres – this is a real testament to the skill of the band and the way they approach their craft. Submotion Orchestra have carved themselves a niche in the music scene and are producing some of the most interesting, exciting and accomplished music coming out of Britain at the moment. Whether you’re a Submotion Orchestra fan or completely new to the band, Alium is like nothing else you will hear this year.

Submotion Orchestra are touring throughout November. Keep up with the band on their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
