Goldie Interview 2011

Drum and Bass | Monday 11th July 2011 | Osh

It’s been a long time coming but drum and bass pioneer has finally released a fabriclive mix. We caught up with Goldie and found out a bit more about it... Yes G whats up! How you doing man? I’m firing man, what’s going on? Where are you at the moment bro? I’m in a back of a car going to see my son in prison... its all good tho... What don’t you know about me Osh? I don’t know how you came up with the songs for the Fabric CD. I can see they are classics! Well the fact of the matter is when i’m talking to journalists I gotta go into what I gotta go into but you know the music. You know the music and you know they’re bonified. Was it hard to choose these tracks? Nah man, standard You know what, there is a lot of shirts out there.. people playing what they want to play that’s easy. Its all good just being a DJ but what about keeping your finger on the pulse and saying “you know what” Its all about educating some people, what about playing them something they might not have heard? For real I think if we were both back in the day like in Bluenote... if we had played that in Bluenote would not exist. If we had played that music in Bluenote you would have gone out there for 2 months at most. You have to understand, some of that music we were hearing we were hearing for the very first time and that music, that same music we are talking about has stood the test of time. I think it is important to shine a light onto these tracks that might be getting the deserved attention. Yeah man, Metropolis, Commix, Mutated Forms...WOW! As well as the new people, I think this will mean a lot to those true old school Drum and Bass heads from back in the day too. Yeah, yeah. I think there is a shout for everyone on there. I look at Mustated Forms and I mean if Bluenote was still going like it was in Hoxton Square that tune would be played standadly. I ain’t spoon feeding people shit because I want to get paid. You know what I mean. I think it is important that, there is all elements of music out there, I know what my corner’s about, you know what I am saying. A lot of it is about integrity man. I see some DJ’s looking at their watches being like RA! I‘m like ‘Do you REALLY like this...Really?‘ you know what I mean. You know what, some people do, each to their own, that’s what I try not to forget. It’s like ‘I’ve had a bit of chicken, I want it to taste good. I want the whole meal. You want everything? I want everything, I want the whole meal. I don’t wanna feel hungry when I finished If you were going to describe your Fabric Mix in two words, what words would they be? I would say euphoric and dynamic. I thought Bluenote was great because it was dynamic, It was about different DJ’s pushing different styles, you know what I mean. Is there one particular tune on the CD that would sum up that time? I think ‘Doubts’ by Mutated Forms, I’ve always liked that tune. I think Hybridge has shown the potential of the attraction to this type of music, like the attraction to Motown. Rido and Hybridge are young but they are mature enough to try and understand the music, I think Rido especially is a brilliant producer and I think they are going to go far. Do you have a most treasured moment from back then G? I’d say bring my Mother to Bluenote and showing everyone and saying we’ve made it. This music has made it. Don’t you remember that? They switched the lights on and said Goldie has made it then switched the lights back off and just got down again. That was probably one of my proudest moments. They call you the king of Drum and Bass... Nah man. That ain’t me, you’ve got the wrong guy. That’s what they say haha You know me man. You know what it is? It ain’t about the ego. Me? I’m just humble. They can call me whatever the fuck they want. They can also call me a bad salsa dancer. Doesn’t really matter mate. Me? It’s all about the music. I’m fucking infamous, infamous! They can call me what they want At the end of the day mate, I’m out here grinding, still! and you know … I fuckin love this music. For sheezy, It’s a good time right now for Drum and Bass, DJ Fresh is at number one in the charts right now. Unbelievable innit. It’s fantastic. It’s brilliant...It’s weird, you’ve got all these people trying to get to number one, all these nu-bees. When he’s coming from Drum and Bass and he smashes it! Did you ever think that this would happen, back at Bluenote? Only a matter of time. Only a matter of time. One of was goong to do it and you know what Fresh, a fucking great guy, I’m really pleased for him man. I’m fucking chuffed for him man. Who knows what could happen now? Anything could happen. Anything could happen. Simple as that So you’re a family man now? I’m a family man now, I’ve got my wife, dropping a kid in 4 weeks..I’m happy as Larry man. She’s my rock man. I am out there and it brilliant, I have been out there.. I have been on the road... and now... its not me. Bit she’s still letting you get up to mischief though? She let’s me out, she knows what I am like she lets me loose, she lets me do what I want to do. She is not compramising me like that. I’m not as silly as I used to be. I’ve kinda grown out of that metality, as you get older, you’ve got to learn from your mistakes and I think for me, I’ve got a great post card on my window that says ‘I’ve learned so much from my mistakes....I’m thinking of making a few more’. Haha. For me I have learnt a lot, I’m in a great place right now. I’m focused. I’m sleeping like four hours a night, I’m in the best place I could possibly be right now. So here’s a scenario, you are exiled from your home and thrown onto a desert island. What 3 people would you bring? (dead or alive) I would take the kid so he could play all the guitar he likes to keep me sane! I would take Steve Jobs so he could bring all the Ipads so I could stay in touch with the rest of the world and I would take the missus. OK man, I’m going to list off a couple of words and you say the first words that spring to your mind? Fabric PROPA! Randall. Darkest Deepest, Roller! Paradise. Fuck me! Haha! Wow, wow! That’s all I can say, wow and more wow! Fuck me wow and then the morning light What’s next for Goldie? We have the Timeless project. We’ll have night with a full orchestra. All played live. None the old sitting with the laptop with an orchestra hanging by. I don’t want that rubbish! Proper notation the whole thing. I do Yoga teacher training five days a week. I’m going to be a yoga teacher, can you fucking believe that one! I have been at the Grosvernor House what was Mental, Flying in a helicopter to the Grand Prix with Redbull I’m just doing my thing.
