Plump DJs

You guys from day one have been making phat tunes, but why are you called the Plump DJs?
We were inspired by top shelf porn mag called Plumpers. It's a mag for those who like the larger woman. We discovered the magazine by accident after returning from Glastonbury. We could not get the images out of our head and the word 'plump' was locked in forever.

Why do you think that you’ guys have been so consist over the years with your production and djing?
We have a good team and we work hard. Andy and myself have done nothing but Plump for over 10 years now. We create in our studio during the week and play the music we make on the weekend.

What format do you use  when your djing and why?
 We mix on 4 times Pioneer CDJ 1000s, Alan and Heath zone 92 mixer and a Q2 splitter box. The Q2 allows both of us to mix simultaneously, this provides us with a unique performance platform. We love the hands on/usability of CDs and prefer to look at a CD wallet full of tunes than at a tiny computer screen whilst in a nightclub environment. We prefer the sound from vinyl but it's not practical anymore for the producer DJ.

What is our most memorable moment djing?
Playing to 20,000 people in Sydney at the Field Day New Years Day Festival, in 2001. It felt like we'd bought 20,000 people a drink when we dropped our productions 'The Gate' and 'Scram' in the setting Aussie sun.

What do you think of the state of clubbing at the moment particularly in the Breaks scene?
It is impossible to generailse about the state of clubbing Worldwide for the scenes are as varied and specific as the cultures and history of each country. We have been lucky enough to perform for the first time in the USA and Canada this year, and have witnessed great support for our music at all of our shows. Our diary for next year is filling up healthily. From where we are sitting clubland is as varied and colourful as ever.

After wining many awards and making timeless hits is it hard reinventing your sound?
No not at all. We do not reinvent our sound as a conscious effort. Our sound develops as a by-product of our quest to make fresh and exciting new music. It's such a great feeling to be given an award for doing something you love. We are lucky lads.

What other DJ/Producers do you respect in the music scene?

Carl Cox, James Zabelia, Stanton Worrylords, Adam Freeland, Meat Katie, Miles Dyson, Chemical Brothers, Loops of Fury and Martin Hortger.

Have you guys ever thought about going down live band route?

'Plump DJs Live' is a little confusing and we are unsure of the level of support there would be for such an act. Our 4 deck DJ show has progressed in leaps and bounds over the last year and we hope that it will stand up soon in a live arena. Watch this space...

What have Plump Djs got in store for 2010?
We are launching a record label called Grand Hotel which we will use to showcase new talent and Plump productions. We will also be hosting Grand Hotel events in London,around the UK and Worldwide. We are getting back on the remix tip having just completed tracks for Dave Spoon and Deadmau5. We will be touring Australia in Feb for good vibrations and are still riding high after completing our Global Underground mix.



You guys produce electronic music but a lot of it has soul and a much deeper meaning then just percussion. Where does this come from?
We were both brought up on a mixed diet of Motown, Soul and Rock and Roll as kids. As teenagers - Hip Hop, as Students - Rave and Indie Music. Our diverse musical history is one reason for a certain depth in our currentproductions.



Whats your worst djing nightmare you have had to date?
We both have a reoccuring nightmare involving DJing to thousands of people, turning round to find our record box is empty or full of someone elses records. In real life the only nightmarish thing that has ever happened at one of our gigs
was a man falling from a 20 ft balcony. Thankfully he only had a cut to his head and a bruised ego.
