Mikill Pane Interview

Other | Friday 11th February 2011 | Osh

As well as being a good rapper, Mikill Pane obviously has a great sense of humour judging by his myspace and twitter pages. We had a good laugh with the 26 year old when we sat down and caught up with him for a chat.

We’ve come to the conclusion you are the love child of of Lightspeed Champion and Travie Mc. Coy how does this make you feel...?
It makes me feel hurt and appalled that you'd insult me so early on in the interview.  I've always believed I'm the love child of Beres Hammond and Mark 'E' Everett.  To be honest though, I was getting the Lightspeed Champion comparison a lot at one point.  I went to see him play a Haiti charity gig with Jack Penate a while ago at The Old Blue Last.  While he was upstairs performing, a dude came up to me at the bar downstairs and bought me a drink, saying he was a big fan of me, 'Dev Hynes'...ale fail.  The Travie McCoy comparison's only been made once.  I went on a date with one of his ex-groupies once actually, so maybe twice.

We’ve also heard you’ve been compared to Mike Skinner ( Lyrically), How would you describe your musical style?
I try not to describe my musical style.  It would only lead to arguments with people that described it differently.

What UK artists are doing it big for you right now, who should we look out for?
My DJ and producer Will Power, a band I manage called Mademoiselle Mademoiselle, Bill Posters and Enbee.

Do you have a motto?
'Never have a motto'.

On your website you describe yourself ‘as the rightful owner of all titles including Best Rapper Alive (sorry Jay-Z, I’m a huge fan but somebody obviously lied to you) your clearly and opinionated person do you feel it comes across in your lyrics?
I think so, yeah.  I give my view on things lyrically so I guess it's inevitable that my opinion will be obvious.

In your video ‘ The return of Mr Pane’ you keep it real and really stick to your London/ Shoreditch roots, was the concept your idea?
It was a concept dreamed up by the director Joe Miller, but I had my fair share of input when it came to certain scenes.

Can you give us an exclusive?
Anyone reading this should go to http://soundcloud.com/mikillpane as soon as possible.  I'll upload a free tune for download called 'The Guestlist Network Exclusive' the day this issue comes out.

What’s next for you this year?
Food shopping.

Randoms!

Fave Drink of Choice.
Guinness at the moment.

Current Obesssion?
Black pornography.

Wierdest place you’ve woken up?
In a good mood.

Has a rumour ever been spread about you?
Yeah: that I'm the love child of Lightspeed Champion and Travie McCoy.

If you were invisible what would you get up to?
The normal activities: I'd visit various female changing rooms and bank vaults, then I'd visit the Welcome Trust and see if someone could tell me why the f*** I was invisible.

If you could fill a pool of anything?
Drowned paedos.

Party Trick?
Always gatecrash.

If someone wrote a biography about you what would the title be?
If This is the Shit I Know About, Imagine the Shit I Don't...

When was the last time you said FML!?
When Nick Clegg asked me if I could think of a motto for him.

What would we find in your fridge?
That there's a relationship between the opening of the door and the activation of the light.  Absolutely nothing else at the moment.  This interview, above all, has served as a timely reminder that I need to do some food shopping.
