Kanio Interview

After some time in the music industry under various aliases Kanio smashed his way onto the underground dance music scene in late 2007 with a string of chart topping productions. Widely regarded as the largest download site worldwide, Kanioís productions have regularly featured in the charts on Beatport. In little more than a year he achieved a massive 5 top tens and a further 7 top 20's, cementing his position on the worldwide scene, and becoming nominated for best minimal artist at the Beatport music awards 2009. Off the back of this swift rise, September 2008 saw the launch of his Novakane imprint which followed quickly in sales success. Ever keeping his sound cutting edge in 2010 he launched 'Lower East' with compadres Cozzy D and Lee Brinx; a new Label focussing on more organic, deeper, housey sounds. Besides Novakane and Lower East, Kanio has signed tracks and had remixes commissioned to labels such as Trapez, Traum, Noir, Yellow Tail, Autist, Suruba, Stereo Seven Plus, and Italo Business.

You have risen in the ranks quite quickly, how did this happen?

I guess I had a lot of productions hit the top 10 on Beatport last year and the year before.

Where do you take your influences from?

They change all the time, at the moment I'm really digging deep house and nu-disco. I guess I'm getting a bit older and a bit more relaxed in my taste.

Name me 3 things that annoy you about the scene

Uneducated Crowds, Shit soundsystems, Ryan Air :)

If you were not a producer, what would you be doing?

Flipping Burgers, then eating them.

What have you got planned for the rest of the year?

Just going to continue gigging and working hard in the studio.

Your style has changed somewhat from techno/minimal, what caused it?

I guess I just moved the scene ans things became more organic and housey

If you were stuck on an island with 3 music legends who would they be and why?

Jimmy Hendrix, New Order, and Richie Hawtin. I guess they've all been a big inspiration to me.

What do you do when you are not djing/producing or clubbing?

I'm happiest when I'm in London with my Friends and family.

Do you think there are any producers in the House & Techno scene that are pushing the boundries?

I'm really into Jamie Jones and the crosstown rebels stuff at the mo. It's house but often with some electronic elements which I like.

What do your parents think about the music you make?

My Parents have been really supportive for a long time, they are proud of what I achieved, for which I will always be grateful.

What is your worst DJ nightmare to date?

Nothing too disastrous to mention.

Easy Jet or Ryan Air?

I despise them both, but Ryan Air are way worse. Thinking of putting a clause in my contract so I never have to fly with them again. Always a horrible experience.

What are your top 3 Drum and Bass tunes of all time?
Tough one but maybe: Trust me, warhead, and Turbulance .
