Danny Daze
Raised in Miami Daniel Gomez aka DJ Danny Daze, Best Club DJ in 2009 by Miami New Times, started playing at raves at the age of 13! We caught up with this man while he’s getting ready for his trip around the UK and Europe.
I’m here with man of the moment, Danny Daze, what’s happening man?
I’m happy man. I’m hanging out.
Nice, you’ve just came to London, you’ve been here since Saturday, right? I’ve heard you went straight to Fabric!
Yeah that was crazy man, first gig ever in London. Fabric is one of the best clubs in the world, insane man!
Did you get some feedback from anyone?
Yeah, Judie that does the booking! She was ecstatic, she wanted to bring me back and stuff... That was really rad.
You’re over here for a little while, right? Are you hitting all the big clubs in the country?
I’m in London until November 1st, then traveling over Europe. Right now in a couple hours I am going to Leeds, then I’m doing Manchester, then heading over to Berlin to do Watergate, which is a pretty big club.
Wicked! Does it feel like a bit of a dream time for you?
It happened pretty quick, I wasn’t expecting it, you know, I don’t try and push myself to much I just make music and if it comes out right, it comes out right.

Yeah!
You’re like a young chap man, 25 years old but you’ve been making music for like 13 years, right?
I’ve been DJing for 13 years, but I’ve been doing music for about the last 8 years.
And now you’re signed to one of the hottest groups around Hot Creations?
They are all really good producers, it’s really cool to be a part of that crew. They are all really talented, you know, good music, know how deep to go.
How did that come about?
Somebody, I think Seth had the track. I think one of my buddies sent it over to him and basically Jamie heard it and said put this thing out. I’m not even sure exactly how it happened, it just happened and a couple days later we released a record.
Who is your biggest influence at the moment?
Maceo Plex, one of the biggest guys out there, he’s doing cool stuff right now. I’m really influenced by a lot of old type disco, old Techno Electro, some from Detroit, that’s where some of my influences come from and obviously Miami. Miami based sound and 808 music.
You’re from one of our favourite places, you’re here in London now, you’re going to Ibiza, what are you looking forward to, what’s left to excite you?
This is all new to me, I’ve been traveling for a while, but I’ve never done a proper UK, Europe circuit, so this is very exciting.
You’re Cuban, do you think your music has a bit of a Cuban influence?
Maybe not the records that recently came out, but a lot of stuff does have Cuban rhythms, Afro-Cuban beats and stuff like that. I’m very influenced by that kind of music and when I play out I can play a lot more tribal stuff just out of nowhere.
So that Cuban thing is where you get your swing thing from?
A lot of syncopation, you know, definitely man!
As a self proclaimed music man how do get on it in the studio?
Yeah, it’s pretty weird, I would go in and come out 12 hours later without eating anything, which is probably why I’m so skinny [Laughs]. I usually just lock myself in there until I come up with something I feel good with, then I would go outside and later come back and finish it up, you know.
Have you got a key?
Not really, man. Knowing when a song is done without over doing it, I think that’s the biggest thing.
I know how you do things in Miami, it’s always big.
Yeah [Smiles]
Have you got one of those crazy studios?
I built a studio in my mum’s house, a little studio with sound proof. It’s not really big, it’s a studio built for me not to bother the neighbours or my mum.
Usually in Americas not really big is half the size of this restaurant [Laughs]
[Laughs] Yeah!

[Laughs] I’m actually going to be doing something with Maceo. He has a new label coming out, so that’s pretty hot.
Must be exciting?
Yeah he’s a great producer and I’m going to be getting in the studio with Lee, let’s see what comes out of that.
What is the club for you?
Last year it’s been The Edge and then Fabric. The Edge is insane, especially from 4 til 12pm, it’s a long set and it was still packed at the end.
That’s also a good testament to the London club scene.
Yeah, yeah.
If you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would you fill it with?
Money, man! I’m kidding, probably Gummy Bears [Laughs]. I’ve had dreams about that, man. A swimming pool full of Gummy Bears, that would be fun!
