3 Free and Fabulous Nights Out in London

Other | Tuesday 27th August 2013 | kimzung

Check out what's free to do in London on a night out. You don't have to work all day and spend all night bored, here's a taster of some of the things the nation's capital has to offer to those on a low budget looking for cheap night out.

A number of popular London comedy clubs now offer free entry to open mic nights where you can get in at no charge and lap up the laughs with newcomers to the stage and seasoned pro's alike looking to exercise their gag muscles.

Try the Comedy Cafe in Shoreditch which opens it's doors every Wednesday night to showcase some of London's up and coming comedy talent.

Angel Comedy is a well established comedy gig at Camden Head in Islington which happens every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday night from 8pm, offering a mixture of better known as well as lesser known acts trying stand up comedy for the first time. The line up is regularly updated on their website so you can find out what you're in for before you head out. It's great value, go and get some laughs in for free!

How about the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden? This modern and ultra classy venue is a good choice for some free events with a bit of culture. They regularly put on student performances by young musicians and dancers which are entirely free and gives you the chance to meet some of the performers in person. Several arts festivals are also hosted by The Royal Opera House each year with free entry to many of the events. This year they have The Deloitte Ignite Festival coming up in September, curated by actor/comedian Stephen Fry. Running over 4 weekends from 6-29 September it includes many events which are free to the public. Try it out for a touch of class.

And for a really good deal, you can't get cheaper than a non/semi-legit squat party. Squat parties are the ultimate in free partying and raves in London on a mass scale. You have to keep your ears open to connect with these events, usually organised and put together right at the last minute, so be ready to chase the music where ever it goes.  A good place to start is to hook up with the locals (Brixton has a good reputation) or try getting the scoop on the mysterious and sometimes secretive party lines. Some reliable phone numbers are published on the urban75.org website, www.urban75.org/brixton/clubs/squats.html give them a call and begin tracking down these legendary events which usually kickoff around midnight and go on through the early hours and into the later hours of the A.M. Drum n Bass, House n Techno, Trance and other dance music genres are all covered by the banging D.J's who pump out the beats on massive sound systems to the jumping, wide eyed, enthusiastic party crowd.
