Vybz Kartel’s talks his Book: “Something is wrong with Jamaica, and I hope this book disturbs you”

Reggae | Tuesday 7th May 2013 | Daniella

Dancehall  Superstar Vybz Kartel has released a book call The Voice of the Jamaican Ghetto, which aims to disturb readers by exposing the reality of Jamaican culture.

In the book he states; “As strange as it may sound, I hope you do not enjoy this book. I hope it disturbs you. I hope after reading it you realise there is something wrong with Jamaica that needs to be fixed. I hope you will never look at a ghetto person the same again.”

The book is the first to be released from the Jamaican superstar, who is usually known for producing hit after hit and seen flashing his expenses in extravagant videos. It seems the Jamaican community doesn’t like the change, as the book has not been well received in a number of parishes.

The book has been met by rejection throughout the island and in book stores at large. Co-author Michael Dawson thinks this is down to Kartel’s controversial personality, numerous altercations with the law, and misconceptions about his public persona.

Dawson says; "They think it's about lewd lyrics, violence and pro-devil messages, however, the book rejects those things. He speaks of putting in place mandatory age restriction for dances and music censoring. He apologized for singing a particular song, he calls for more research to be done about Tacky and the Rodney riot and other things, so it's mostly Jamaican history.”

In Europe however the book has been met with high acclaim. Its been published in a number of European languages and has made a big impact. The recognition could see the Jamaican superstar become a British star so keep an eye of for the Vybz Kartel tour due to hit London!
