Snoop Dogg Reincarnated into ‘Lion’

Reggae | Friday 15th March 2013 | Daniella

No longer Hip-Hop star Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion has embraced the Rastafari movement and been reincarnated into a Reggae star.

WHY!? In his documentary ‘Reincarnated’ Lion explains his bold decision to change his name and image as a way of putting love and positive energy into the universe through his music.

“There’s so much negativity and death and destruction that we need to match that with peace, love and happiness, as opposed to matching that negative with a negative,” he says in his interview with HitFix.

Snoop Lion is using the name to release his new Reggae/Dancehall album to be released on 23 April 2013, featuring collaborations with Chris Brown, Drake, Busta Rhymes, Rita Ora, Movado, T.I and Akon. This is the twelfth studio album from the star, however this is the first Reggae album to be released on the label Berhane Sound System, Doggystyle records, Mad Decent, Vice Records and RCA Records.

The forthcoming album is inspired by the likes of Reggae musicians such as The Wailers, Bob Marley, Greggory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer and Jimmy Cliff.

The 41 year old says, "To me, the Lion is the growth of Snoop Dogg - me growing into the next phase of my musical career, the next phase of my life. But at the same time, I can never get rid of who I am.

He stressed that he’s not trying to get rid of the Snoop Dogg tag, "I'm an East Side Long Beach Rollin 20s Crip, first and foremost ... I'm Snoop Doggy Dogg, then I'm Snoop Dogg, then I'm Snoop Lion. But it's all the same."

The documentary film will be released in UK theatres on 22 March 2013.
