The gifted Depedro, real name Jairo Zavala, helms, runs and rules proceedings on his soon to be released, eponymous, first solo project on the new National Geographic label, Nat Geo Music, due out September 14th.
Ahead of this the Latin American / Spaniard is taking full advantage of being in the country to play the Big Chill alongside Calexico, and has been invited by the people behind The Local to play a one-off gig at East London’s Slaughtered Lamb on the evening of August 6th.
DePedro, a chosen name, because it sounded “kind of Mediterranean, kind of Spanish†is the culmination of years of writing (often for others), touring, travelling and sonic ingestion. Brought up in Madrid to a Peruvian father he was exposed from an early age to a bevy of styles from pre-war Spanish, Latin American and African, as well as rock from the 70’s and 80’s.
Fusing all these influences it’s Jairo’s warm, expressive and sometimes scratchy tones that gives DePedro his indefinable edge. He’s certainly tackling head on themes that the traditionalists wouldn’t, but retaining a level of authenticity. A personable and vibrant performer who celebrates influences, engages and entertains – DePedro is one not to be missed.
DePedro and his album of the same name is due for release on Nat Geo Music on 14th Sept 2009.
