Top 5 - Unexpected Hip Hop Collaborations

Wednesday 10th July 2013 | Matt

After reporting on Tech N9ne’s surprising upcoming collaboration with late 60s iconic psychedelic rock band ‘The Doors’ I decided to see what other unusual collaborations had taken place. It’s been common place for rappers to work with other artists since the dawn of hip hop but below is a list of the five most interesting examples I came across.

5. Michael Jackson & Notorious B.I.G – This Time Around.

In 1995 the King of Pop teamed with The King of New York rap for an interesting and catchy collaboration showing us a slightly ‘harder’ side of Jacko. Although you wouldn’t immediately think of pairing the two together they both show us why they were the master of their craft. RIP Biggie and MJ.

4. Snoop Dogg & Akshay Kumar – Singh Is King

Snoop Dogg is not known to be particular fussy about who he works with but in his illustrious career this is definitely the strangest collaboration. The song was from the soundtrack of the Bollywood movie of the same name and features lead actor Akshay Kumar on vocal duties alongside the big D O double G.

3. Lyte Funky Ones & M.O.P – Life is Good

One of the softest boy bands who brought us the likes of ‘Summer Girls’ and ‘Girl on the TV’ teamed up with one of the hardest rap groups know for songs like ‘Born To Kill’ and ‘Ante Up’. The result? Pretty much what you would expect; a very strange mismatch of styles.

2. Bone Thugs n Harmony & Phil Collins – ‘Home’

I certainly didn’t see this one coming. Sacramento melodic gangsta rap crew Bone Thugs n Harmony teamed up with British crooner and ex Genesis drummer Phil Collins on this surprisingly decent track.

1. .Ceelo Green & The Muppets – All I need is Love

Ceelo Green’s Christmas song with the Muppets is definitely an interesting song. I can’t tell if it’s absolutely hilarious and a feel good gem or whether, as Statler and Waldorf cheekily put it at the end of the video "I think the Muppets hit a new low." "Yeah, and his first name is Cee!"
