Artist of the Month: Compa

Drum and Bass | Monday 8th July 2013 | Cristina

It is becoming hard to find original, exciting dubstep in the original sense of the word – profound and complex electronic music with mind-blowing bass. Since many new releases in the genre consist of mutated styles and sounds, however interesting and laudable, true-skool dubsteppers have found allegiance to the genre increasingly difficult to uphold. Enter Compa.

Compa arrived on the scene in the past couple of years and is one of the few artists currently standing on the cutting edge of dubstep and bass music, injecting new life back into a flagging community and proving that dubstep doesn’t need the blessing of dubstep godfather Skream, who recently denounced the genre, to go on.

Compa works at 140bpm, with a refreshingly deep sound - menacing, driving percussion and wub bass which resounds past the level of commercial basslines and well into the dank territory of the shadowy dungeon sound. This is dubstep for those who want music which intricately evokes a place and a feeling rather than mindlessly whipping you into a frenzy - for those who listen for the music rather than the party.
