Marathon Man for Mayor

Other | Thursday 6th June 2013 | Michael

Eddie Izzard, the British comedian, actor, ‘marathon man’ and possible future Mayor of London. Izzard has recently stunned the British media by wanting to become the new mayor of London on behalf of the Labour Party, overtaking the current Conservative Mayor, Boris Johnson.

Johnson is a man who is certainly on a mission, winning the hearts of the public with his bike riding and famous media appearances, but the question is has Boris being doing his work? Izzard thinks not. He talked to ‘The Mirror’ about his friend Ken Livingstone, "It was Ken's idea, he saw cycles for hire in France and wanted to set it up, but no-one seems to mention that. It's 'Ken cycles' not ‘Boris bikes'.”

But I ask myself, do we have to look at the situation as Labour vs. Conservative or do we look at this as a comedian vs. politician? Maybe it’s about time for a dramatic change within London; maybe we need somebody who hasn’t grown up with the life of politics, private education and privilege – maybe we need someone who is from a similar background to you and me.

Izzard is taking a risk swapping his witty jokes and mad humour with powerful political speeches. Could this be the future face of London’s streets? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
