Interview with Jonny Cruz

Tuesday 30th April 2013 | Osh

Joe Le Groove caught up with the one and only Jonny Cruz that will be headlining at Return To The Future on 3rd May.

What kind of music were you listening to when you were growing up?

Early on--- mostly hip hop, and bands like Deftones, Sublime, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran Duran. Then came techno and drum & bass.

What made you want to be a DJ/producer?

Just going to the raves back in the day, I was overwhelmed by the energy and vibe good DJ's could create when they had a room going. I was sold on wanting to achieve that same momentum probably from the first time I ever experienced it.

You have been making waves over the last couple years and have also been signed to My Favourite Robot, how did that come about?

I met up with my mate Emerson Todd back in 2010 in Berlin and we got in the studio and made an EP together, one day when were close to finish the EP, he says to me "we should send it to My Favourite Robot" I remember saying, what the fuck is my favourite robot? He explained who they were and I did some research and well needless to say, it was like I had found a home!

You have just been made a resident for Return To The Future; the boys have been speaking highly off you. When did you meet Ben and Will?

I met Will last summer in Croatia at The Garden festival, we had a great time out there for sure. And I met Ben in Mexico right before BPM started we met at the Day Zero party hosted by Crosstown Rebels.

We immediately got on, he came and saw me play at this rooftop party I did. We became instamates!

I see you’re Sloks Electronic Petz vol 6, what else have you got in the pipeline for 2013?

Yeah, got that…as well as my label project called Touch Of Class records with my best buddies Ray Zuniga & Mikey Tello (Pillow Talk) a.k.a. Signal Flow, so expect some material coming out on that imprint as well as my full length album coming out on My Favourite Robot sometime in the summer. Also some collaborations, I have a few with Eric Volta, one which is coming out on Ellum, Maceo Plex's label. Aside from that, I have a track coming out on a VA on Audioflys imprint Supernature and loads of more things don't want to spoil too much!!!

What other producers are you feeling at the moment?

Cesare vs Disorder, Pascal Feos, Jon Charnis, Sons Of Tiki, Eric Volta, Timo Maas, James Teej. There’s more but those are off the top of my head.

If you had to invent another music genre what would you call it?

Nut Slap; the way you would dance to it would be as if you just got slapped in the nuts.

Name one thing in the world you couldn’t live without?
My ears.

So you used to be an MC years ago do you ever use your vocals for projects?

Loads! Including my own tunes and collabs with others.

If you were banished to a desert island and had to take 3 famous people dead or alive, who would you take and why would you take them?

Jim Morrison, Anthony Bourdain and Samuel L. Jackson…I would take them because they all are bad motherfuckers. I would love to go out and have some drinks with them.
