Call Me Gangnam: what has the internet created?

What happens when you take shameless Canadian pop and blend it with a viral South Korean pop song?
The result is… well, it’s startling to say the least. There are some weird and wonderful mixes floating around online, but this one is in another league altogether – in fact, it might actually be another sport. Some clever nutjob on Soundcloud has managed to mash up Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ with the dulcet tones of ‘Gangnam Style’ by K-pop artist PSY. Just sit back and take a moment to absorb that information.
Jepsen attracted a lot of attention with her debut release last year, with massively divided views as to whether it was a genuinely decent offering or just terrible. By contrast, ‘Gangnam Style’, especially the video, is in equal parts hilarious and deeply unsettling. The only thing the two tracks have in common is the tempo, but that’s all it takes to put two songs together, and that’s exactly what has happened, for better or (more likely) worse. Worryingly, the result is seamless – they fit together perfectly. It really does have to be heard to be believed.
One wonders what was going through the creator’s mind at the time of this mix’s conception. Actually, scrap that – it’s probably best left unknown. It is surely only a matter of time before a video gets thrown together. Part of me wants it to happen – the other part wants to nuke the whole thing from orbit.
