Recommended Mix: Balance Presents Kölsch

House | Thursday 27th November 2014 | Osh

With the Balance Presents mix series bringing back the labels well-known penchant for progressive and melodic house, the third instalment sees Kölsch take to the decks with an epic 19 track mix blending deep, riff heavy melodic house with classic techno.

The circling arpeggios of the opener, Underground Resistance’s 1993 classic Galaxy- Journey Of The Dragons seemlessly transitions into John Talabot’s remix of Pional- It’s All Over providing a gentle, timeless entry. Kölsch quickly switches things up as Talabot’s remix evolves into 303 acid squelches of Frozen’s remix of Danny Daze- Freeze. What makes this mix so impressive is Kölsch’s ability to continually vary and play with pacing, dynamics, emotion and intensity whilst maintaining a cohesive and immersive experience; Henrik Swarz’s heavily percussive assault ‘Lockstep’ somehow effortlessly soothes into the haunting, filmic chords of Radiohead’s Videotape playing on emotions just much as movement.

The 19 track selection features music from many of house music's heavy weights such as Caribou, Maceo Plex and Kenny Larkin as well as Kölsch’s remix of Coldplay's 'Sky Full Of Stars'. The side-chaining and spacious Edge-esque guitar sounds of the remix blended with luscious, building arpeggios subtly hints at trance for a climatic and progressive ending worthy of Balance Records. Kölsch’s exclusive 'Punchbuggy' is an early insight into what to expect from his forthcoming productions that was premiered this weekend on Pete Tong's Radio 1 show. The future looks bright for both the Balance Presents series and Kölsch with this mix being the strongest and most prolific of the series yet.
