A Night in Paradise: A Fundraiser at the Ministry of Sound

House | Wednesday 19th November 2014 | Osh

On Sunday 30th November Ministry of Sound, one of London’s biggest dance and house music venue, is hosting A Night in Paradise: the official HIV fundraiser consists of a night of seminal US and UK garage music. Coinciding with World AIDS Day, the event aims to raise £20,000 to be split evenly between two major HIV charities, New York’s Gay Men’s Health Crisis and UK’s Terrence Higgins Trust.

Dedicated to Larry Levan and Mel Cheren, A Night in Paradise is a celebration of the original club Paradise Garage, established in 1977 in New York City. Tucked away in an old parking garage at no. 84 King Street, it was here that DJ Levan rose to fame. The club was a safe-haven for gay men who, in the throes of the HIV crisis, were being turned away from mainstream clubs and venues. Now, over thirty years later, Ministry of Sound is bringing that paradise to London.

In The Box, Paradise Garage 1977-1987 features the sounds of the original NYC club with artists such as Danny Krivit Joey Llanos, David DePino, Victor Rosado, with PA Jocelyn Brown.

103 features Ministry of Sound - The First Ten Years; showcasing the venue’s own history are the artists Justin Berkmann, Kenny Carpenter, Ricky Morrison, Frankie Foncett, David Piccioni, with PA – Bryan Chambers.

The Baby Box plays host to Handsome (Disco/Hi NRG/House) with Horse Meat Disco, Jeffrey Hinton, The Reflex, and Fidel.

The Loft space features the photography of Matt Holyoak.

A Night in Paradise is designed to bring the Paradise Garage ethos to London, to continue raising awareness around HIV/AIDS, and to support two exemplary HIV charities.
